The breed

ORIGIN

Great Britain

GENERAL APPEARANCE

A short-haired dog, stout build, rather small, wide, vigorous and compact stature. The head is very large, especially in proportion to their size, but no body part should have an excessively large size in relation to the others, so the general symmetry is not broken and the dog doesn't seem badly formed or have impeded aptitude of movements. They have a short face with a snout that is blunt and turned up. The body is short and well-structured, with solid, muscular and robust limbs. The rear is high and strong but light in comparison with the front end, which is very powerful. The females should not be as large or well-developed as the males.

CHARACTERISTICS

The dog gives the impression of being determined, vigorous and active.

TEMPERAMENT

Vigilant, brave, loyal, trustworthy, valiant, with a fierce appearance but naturally affectionate.

HEAD AND SKULL

The circumference of the skull is large and should measure (in front of the ears) approximately the same as the dog's height in the region of the cross. From the front, the skull should appear very tall from the angle of the inferior jawbone to the vertex of the cranium and also very wide and square. The eyelashes should be well rounded, extended to the sides, beyond the eyes. From the side, the head should appear very tall, and short between the occipit and the point of the nose. The forehead should be flat, with loose, wrinkled skin on and around the head, without protruding nor falling heavily on the face. The frontal bones should be prominent, wide, square and high, with a deep and wide cavity between the eyes. From the stop, a furrow that should be wide and deep, extended to the middle part of the skull, and continue up to the vertex.

The face measured from cheekbones to nose should be short, the skin wrinkled. The snout should be short, wide, turned up and very deep from the angle of the eye to the beginning of the lips. The nose and nostrils should be large, wide and black, and under no circumstance should they be liver-colored, red or brown; the point of the nose is turned up, in the direction of the eyes. The distance between the interior angle of the eyes (or the center of the stop between the eyes) to the point of the nose should not exceed the distance from the point of the nose to the border of the lower lip. The nostrils should be large and wide, with a well-defined straight vertical line of separation. The lips are thick, wide and hanging, falling completely on the sides of the jawbone, but not in front, uniting with the lower lip in the front and completely covering the teeth. The jaw should be wide, solid and square, with the lower jawbone protruding considerably more than the upper. Viewed from the front, the various qualities of the face should be evenly balanced on both sides of an imaginary line down the center.

EYES

From the front, they seem low in the cranium, far from the ears. The eyes and the stop should be in the same line, perpendicular to the furrow. They should be located as far apart as possible, however the external angles should be within the line of the eyelashes. They should have a rounded form, moderate size, neither sunken nor bulging, with a very dark color- almost black- they should not show the white when the dog looks directly forward.

EARS

Placed high; when viewed from the front, the inner edge of each ear should touch the contour of the skull in its upper margin, so that they are located far apart and appear as high and far from the eyes as possible. They should be small and thin. The form called "

SNOUT

The jawbone is wide and square and should have six small incisors aligned between the canines. The canines are spaced well. The large, strong teeth should not be visible when the mouth is closed. Viewed from the front, the lower jawbone should be directly below and parallel to the upper jawbone.

NECK

Of moderate length (better short than long), very thick and strong. Well arched, with abundant thick, rough fur around the throat, forming a jowl on each side from the lower jawbone to the chest.

FRONT EXTREMITIES

Broad and oblique limbs, very powerful and muscular, giving the impression they are "inserted" in the body. Wide chest, rounded and very deep from the shoulders to the lower part, where the sternum is. Well descended between the front limbs. It should have a large diameter and be rounded behind the front limbs (should not be flat on the sides, the ribs should be well rounded). The front extremities are very firm and strong, well-developed, separated, thick, muscular and straight; they outline an arched contour, but the leg bones should be large and straight; they should not be curved or out of alignment; should be short in comparison with the rear limbs, but not so short as to make the torso appear long or impede the dog's activity or even incapacitate it. The joints should be low and well separated from the ribs. The paws short, straight, and strong.

BODY

Wide chest, rounded on the sides, protruding and deep. The back should be short, strong, wide at the shoulders and relatively narrow in the region of the kidneys. It should present a small cavity behind and around the shoulders (lower part); from this point the spine is elevated through the kidney region (the upper part should be higher than the upper part of the shoulders) and from here curves brusquely to the rear forming an arc (called wheel back) that is a characteristic typical of the breed. The body should have well-defined ribs on the upper and lower sides, with the abdomen firm and not hanging.

REAR EXTREMITIES

The rear limbs should be large and muscular, proportionally longer than the front limbs, so they raise the kidney region. The joints should be loosely curving, well-descended; the leg should be long and muscular from the kidney region to the joints. The lower region should be short, straight and strong; the knee should be rounded and loosely turned outward; the joints are close together while the rear feet face outward.

PAWS

The front feet are straight and slightly turned outward, of medium size and moderately rounded. The rear feet are rounded and compact. The toes should be compact and thick, well separated, so that the knuckles are high and protruding.

BUTTOCKS

Of low implantation, straight and then folding down. Rounded, smooth and without fringe or tough hair. Of moderate size, more short than long, thick at the base, narrowing rapidly to end in a small point. It should be low (without an upward curve at the point) and never should go over the back.

WALKING/MOVEMENT

Particularly heavy and compact, appears like short strides, quickly over the toes. The rear feet almost do not lift and it appears that they skim the floor, moving with one or the other shoulder leading.

FUR

The fur has a fine texture, short, compact, and smooth (the stiff sensation is due to its short and compact quality, but not because it is wiry).

COLOR

Of only one color or stained (a solid color with a black mask and/or snout). The only solid colors permitted (which should be bright and pure) are, for example, dark colors, reds in their various tones, pale tan, etc., white and mottled (that is, a combination of white with any of the other colors). The colors blood red or pink, black and black with red are very undesirable.

SIZE

Males: 25 kg (55 pounds)
Females: 22.7 kg (50 pounds)

DEFECTS

Any variation from the above-mentioned criteria should be considered a fault and will be penalized in proportion to the level of deviation from the standard.

Note: Male specimens should have two testicles of normal appearance completely descended in the scrotum.
